What you did/ with whom/ where: Attended a hula lesson yesterday (9-21-09) in my hometown on the island of Lanai. The hula lesson was held at the Senior Center by Lynette Kaopuiki of Halau hula-hula O Lanai Ka Ula.
What you learned:
1.) Hula originated from Hawaii(Hawaiians). Dancing a hula tells a story. Many tell the myths of the islands. Hawaii is known for their hula dance. It can also explain a love story, genuinely it can mean anything. It can be danced by men and women.
Theroux, Paul. HAWAII. National Geographic 202.6 (Dec. 2002): 2. Academic Search Premier. EBSCO. [Library name], [City], [State abbreviation]. 24 Sep. 2009 .
2.) I learned that different hand gestures and motions represent something. Such as looking above and beyond could meaning that you are scrutinizing for your loved one. Also placing your hand over your heart could mean love. Also rocking a cradle could mean that you are consoling your baby.
Some of the motions of hula is named after a hawaiian attractor such as kalakaua.
3.) You can dance practically well-nigh anything. It could be about your loved one, a baby, searching for someone, the Hawaiian chiefs, etc. I learned at anytime you are dancing you need to be very expressive through your hand motions and facial expressions. This intrigues the audience and lets them feel what you are dancing about.
