Purpose
A quantitative descriptive study is a domineering method employ in research to gather randomness in parade to improve health care (Bowling, 2006, p.1). T. Andrew Bowdle, MD, Aaron Even, MD, Danny D. Shen, PHD, and Meghan Swardstrom, BS conducted this study to determine uses of methadone in general anesthesia, its strength in relation to pain control during surgery. In dividing line to use of opioids such as morphine, meperidine and fentanyl which have resulted in histamine release. Histamine release creates increase propensity for patients to have tachycardia and hypotension. Methadone has non be linked to histamine release.
Limitations and assumptions
Methadone was theorized to be more hemodynamic shelter and improve hypotensive effect of opioids by minimizing histamine effects. Sample sizing of 23 with methadone group with comparison to 20 patients used Fentanyl group. Patients tested taking methadone 6 out of 23 were administered oral opioids previous to experiment and subsequent induction and 7 out of 20 patients were administered oral opioids prior to experiment. Male to female person ratio, race, level acuity (ASA level), patients co-morbidies, number of hours NPO prior to induction, blood glucose levels and most importantly lack of information on individual patients drug tolerance history.
