In Alice Walkers Everyday Use the ingestion of symbolismism is an effective tactic. The most obvious symbol is the deuce quilts, which the central characters Dee and Maggie both want as their own. The narrator, who is also Dee and Maggies mother, has an interesting dilemma on her hands. She must choose which girl is deserving of inheriting the two quilts. The two quilts were pieced together by Grandma Dee and Big Dee, the narrators mother and sister, and do with the scraps from the dresses of Grandma Dee and bits and pieces of granddaddy Jarrells shirts and Great Grandpa Ezras faded blue piece from the uniform he wore in the Civil War. The mother must decipher which miss is deserving of the quilts based on her daughters plans of social function. Dee in the story planned to hang them on display, and assumes that Maggie will oversight the value of the quilts. Dee says, Maggie cant appreciate these quilts! The mother made her conclusion of the premise that Maggie would honor the memory of her family in a more appropriate manner than the more rebellious sister, Dee. The second symbol is intertwined with the meaning of the two quilts. In the story, the character Dee comes home and declares that she has changed her key to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo and brings with her a boyfriend by the name of Asalamalakim. Dees plectron to change her name is significant because she was named after her mothers sister, Dicie. By changing her name, Dee has essentially disowned her family lineage.
