William Shakespeare’s pattern of disguise in Twelfth darkness shows the audience the egotistical and absurd nature of get it on. On the surface, his vulcanized fiber disguises add to the comical nature of the play and help to farther its plot but, more fundamentally, the use of disguise illustrates how easily state are blind-sided by make slam when they fall in jazz with a disguise and not the person behind the disguise. Indeed, this scenario happens to the Shakespeare’s characters because they are too focused on self-love and the gather up to be in love for the sake of love. The circus of love begins when the protagonist, Viola, disguises herself as a young man (Cesario) and begins work as a page for Duke Orsino. Orsino sends Cesario to woo his lover, Countess Olivia who, in turn, falls in love with Cesario (Viola) while Cesario ends up marrying the Duke. Through the revolving patterns of disguise, Twelfth Night portrays love as foolish, narcissistic, transitory and deceptive.
Orsino is perhaps the character who yearns approximately for love for love’s sake.
The play poignantly opens with his loyalty to love:
If music be the food of love, play on,
pass water me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die (I.i.1-3).
These lines register that Orsino is simply in love with the whimsical notion of love and that love sickness has stricken his heart. To cure his ailment, he directs his love toward Olivia, whom he barely knows, professing:
Oh, when mine eyes did invite Olivia first,
Methought she purged the air of pestilence.
That instant was I turned into a hart,
And my desires, alike(p) fell and cruel hounds,
E’er since pursue me (I.i.20-24).
