September 29, 2009 Often times, it is a ritual and tradition for African American people to embrace family traditions for m both years in tramp to fate appreciation to the familys history and its derivatives. except that duty can become very challenging at times, because family and their customs are so familiar that we frequently care them for granted. Alice Walker does a impressive job of bringing human race of these traditions into the short story, Everyday Use, and showing the opposing sides of certain situations in one family such as the African American ethnic traits. In the short story, Alice Walker discloses a lot around human behavior which is displayed through the main characters of the story, Mrs. Johnson, Maggie, and Dee and produces the main root of ancestral roots versus materialism. For instance, Maggie embraces the historical objects and values the things handmade by her pre-existing family members, however Dee only appreciates them for the artistic value and wants to show them off. The author uses symbolism to establish the theme of, family before worldly-minded entities and signify the comforter as a family heirloom. Dee wanted the handmade quilts, yet she didnt have a legitimate disputation as to why she should take them. Mrs.

Johnson asked what would you do with them and Dees reply is hang them (p. 302-303). However, she says that Maggie shouldnt keep them because she wouldnt appreciate them and credibly be backward enough to put them to everyday use. Dee wants to come the objects as relics and would not think of employing them for everyday use. The quilts also mean the Johnsons connection to their community because they were created from patches of clothing from peoples clothes, forming a mosaic that represents their love ones and family history.
