The Institute was created to further research, graduate-level education, and scholarly exchange in the area of economic development and development policy. The Institute reports to twain the Universitys Research and Graduate Development Office, and to the School of Public and environmental Affairs.

IDS serves as a focal point for Indiana Universitys mental contributions to the economic development field through its coordination of faculty research, launching of seminars, course offerings, workshops, and conferences. Programs involve University faculty and students from a variety of disciplines, including Business, Education, Economics, Geography, Law, semipolitical Science, Public and Environmental Affairs, Sociology, and Telecommunications.
