Nursing, Not An Attractive Profession

Hiring nurses from overseas can no longer fill the gap because in that location is a deficit world extensive. Salaries be low, and workloads are high for the remaining nurses. The JCAHO has recommended providing focal point training to nurses; setting staffing levels based on nurse expertness and skill mix; increasing funding for nursing reproduction; establishing a standard postgraduate nursing residency course of instruction; and establishing financial incentives for investing in nursing (Anonymous, JCAHO, 2002). The HHS recently denote a series of federal grants of more than $30 million for nursing command programs to help ease the nursing shortage (Duff, 2002). Other suggestions to ease the shortage include: new models of nursing and health care provisions; reinventing work environments and nursing education to address current needs; establishing a national nursing workforce to collect data; creating a clearinghouse of effective strategies; and forming a national independent body to work on these reforms (Anonymous, Current, 2002). States are each enacting programs in an attempt to address the shortage, from financial incentives, to gentle loans in exchange for working in areas with nursing shortages, simplification patient-nurse ratios, and boosting the capacity of nursing schools (Goodwin, 2002).
