Indian Lands
During the Gilded Age the United States was insistent on civilizing the Indians. One of the major ship canal used to attempt this was taking away tribal put downs and distributing the land to individuals within the tribe. This was done through the Dawes Act of 1887, this act was eluded by the train tribes, consisting of the Cherokees, Choctaws, Chicka proverbs, Creeks, and the Seminoles. Americans during this time were trying to civilize the Indians, but this seemed to hit an odd dichotomy in what was pass judgment of them.
The reasoning base privatizing Indian land was actually twofold, it made the tribe building more closely resemble American society, and it allowed the acquisition of Indian land through buying it off the Indians. Although initially the civilized tribes did manage to elude the Dawes Act, congress the Curtis Act proceeded to divide and sell land parcels to the civilized tribes. Another plus side that westerners saw to allotment was the fact that any excess land would be open for white settlement.




The dichotomy caused by the civilizing of the Indians is an odd one. Americans expected the Indians to be more selfish and less tribe oriented, and at the same time looked down upon the Indians who started land grabbing tribal lands. dapple these Indians were berated for being greedy, no one seemed to draw a equality with the white speculators and prospectors who were land grabbing.
