From researching news text file, personal interviews, organisation reports, and videos from the 1960s-80s, one gets a better prospect of the role play by several groups who were a part of the foundation of the counter-culture movement. First, the civil rights movement which was led by Martin Luther King Jr. was a foundation for equal rights betwixt African Americans and whites. King found a peaceful way to fight the oppression in the south, and even though his protests were peaceful he was still going against the normal culture of society. The picture dates back to May 3, 1963 during a civil rights protest in Birmingham, Alabama where a black observer is creation viciously attacked by white officers, and their police dogs. Onlookers stand mixed-up knowing that interfering could just make the situation worse. This picture shows the harsh realities blacks endured during this time, however with pictures like these hitting big papers the protestors gained the sympathy of many people. The sympathy support led to cumulus gatherings of protestors black and white alike such as the one million million man march on Washington, D.C.
The second group, the Black cougar Party was a more a group of competitory protestors compared to the civil rights activists.
