The french were defeated politically and militarily in Vietnam by 1954 as a result of the tactics used by the Viet Minh. Along with the lack of experience that the French had in the Vietnamese jungles, the French had a serious disadvantage against the Vietnamese and their rebel warfare tactics. These tactics were ultimately the cause of Frances defeat in the first Indochina war.

In 1612, the French landed in Vietnam as Catholic missionaries aiming to turn the Vietnamese residents into people of the Catholic faith. As time went on, the French began to realise that the area of land that Vietnam was determined on was actually plentiful with resources including rubber, which was particularly desirable as it was used to make the tyres of bikes. Between the 1860s and the 1890s, the French declared Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos to be part of its worldwide empire. The French used the Vietnamese peasants as striver labour to harvest the different resources that the land possessed. The slave labourers were known as Corvee. The Corvee consisted of workers aged between 18-50 years who were force to work at least 30 days without pay. The French also introduced taxes on the Vietnamese peasants. This created poverty and famine in Vietnam.

With the French putting so much money into the Vietnamese economy, it began to grow. With 80% of Vietnamese produce being deported to other countries for French profit the Vietnamese people saw no value from this success. The French Indochinese union was divided into five administrative areas: Cochinchina, Annam, Tonkin, Cambodia and Laos. The French took advantage of Vietnam as they had the power to suppress any confrontation against them. The French opened mines and factories in the North of Vietnam and established rice, teatime and rubber plantations in the South.
