I had a chance to sit down and listen to an phone podcast about business enterprisees being created to sue other businesses for intellectual topographic point misdemeanor or obvious infringement. A term that lots was brought up to describe these companies was patent troll. According to the speech sound, patent trolls, have unreasonable demands and act much like the mafia in a way. Patent trolls, in their own way, hurt the competitiveness of other companies and also leads to slowing innovation.
Let us start from the beginning, lance Detkin, popularized the term patent troll in 2001 (Wikipedia, 2012), later co-founded with Nathan Myhrvold and became vice-chairman of a company called Intellectual Ventures (IV). The IV website claims, In 10 perfectly years, weve become a global leader in the business of invention, HOLDING one of the largest intellectual property portfolios (Intellectual Ventures, 2012). However, according to the audio podcast, IV is sitting upon an arsenal of over 30,000 patents, only a mere one thousand were actually originated from IV itself (Glass, 2011).



What does IV need 30,000 patents for anyway? To sue other companies for patent infringement of course! Intellectual Ventures has 1300 shell companies, or entities, because according to the audio, no one really works in these separate companies they ar just shells used to sue other companies. Patents can be moved around to these entities and legal action can be taken against other companies who violate a patent they own. alone in February of this year, IV sued AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile for infringement.
